Mount Rinjani does not have just one face. Determining the right starting point will heavily dictate your summit success rate and the type of scenery that accompanies your journey. Officially, there are three primary entry gates most frequently traversed by international and domestic hikers alike.

Sembalun
Elevation: 1,150mFocus: Summit Best Sunrise
The Sembalun trail is the most logical and efficient route if your primary ambition is conquering the Rinjani Summit (3,726 masl). Almost all 'Summit Attack' packages initiate their first steps from this village due to its geographically advantageous position towards the eastern crater rim.
Terrain & LandscapeDominated by vast, undulating savannahs that turn golden during the dry season. Unquestionably beautiful, yet completely devoid of sheltering trees. Pelawangan Sembalun is renowned as the ultimate spot to witness the Sunrise against the stunning summit silhouette.
Weather ChallengesDirect sun exposure during the day rapidly depletes bodily fluids. Entering the afternoon, the drastic elevation gain (Hill of Regret) will test a trekker's mental fortitude.
Senaru
Elevation: 600mFocus: Lake & ForestBest Sunset
Senaru is the absolute antithesis of Sembalun. The trail is heavily shaded as it pierces the heart of a dense tropical rainforest. If you are hiking purely for relaxation, wildlife spotting (such as the black ebony leaf monkey), and lounging at Segara Anak Lake without summit ambitions, this is the perfect route.
Terrain & LandscapeGiant tree roots, damp soil, and a protective tree canopy. The landscape morphs into rocky terrain near the crater rim. Pelawangan Senaru offers the most epic vantage point to enjoy the Sunset over Segara Anak Lake and Mount Baru Jari.
LimitationsInitiating a summit push from Senaru is highly unadvised as the distance becomes excessively long and circuitous.
Torean
Elevation: 600mFocus: Valley ExplorationBest Nature (Jurassic Park)
Frequently dubbed the 'Jurassic Park' trail, Torean was historically a traditional path for local pilgrims. Today, it has become an official and wildly popular route thanks to its majestic and exotic visual landscape.
Terrain & LandscapeTraversing steep and narrow valley gorges, passing a series of waterfalls (including Penimbungan), and hot sulfur rivers. Visually, it is the route with the best nature, making you feel as if you've stepped directly into a real-life Jurassic Park movie set.
ChallengesHighly fluctuating (extreme cliff ascents and descents). Demands extra vigilance on the knees. Usually utilized as a descent route after summiting via Sembalun.
