Seeing your friends posting their summit attacks on IG giving you FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)? Hold on a second! Mount Rinjani is one of the highest volcanoes in Indonesia. To avoid regretting it halfway up (and burdening your team), read these 7 crucial things before deciding to jump on the bandwagon.
1. Physical Preparation is MANDATORY
Rinjani is NOT a mountain for beginners with zero preparation. The "Hills of Regret" trail and the sandy, loose gravel during the summit attack will destroy your legs if you never exercise. Jog and do cardio regularly for at least 1 month prior.
2. Nerves of Steel
Besides physicality, mental strength is key. When you are hiking through the freezing night towards the summit, your body will scream to give up. You need strong willpower and positive thinking to make it to the top.
3. Bone-Chilling Cold
The temperature at the Rinjani summit before sunrise can approach 0 degrees Celsius (32F). Never underestimate the mountain cold. Bring thick jackets, gloves, a beanie, and a high-quality sleeping bag.
4. Pack Out Your Trash!
The Mount Rinjani National Park enforces strict rules regarding trash (Zero Waste). Whatever food wrappers you bring up MUST be brought back down. Be a responsible hiker.
5. Guides and Porters are Essential
Unless you are a hardcore professional, using the services of local guides and porters (like those provided by Backpacking Rinjani) is highly recommended. Not only does it reduce your physical burden, but you also support the local economy.
6. Limited Climbing Quotas
You can't just show up and hike. There is a daily quota system managed by the eRinjani app. Make sure you have booked your trekking package well in advance so you don't miss out on entry tickets.
7. Dust is Your Loyal Companion
The Rinjani trails (especially in the dry season) are incredibly dry and dusty. It is mandatory to bring a dust mask/buff and sunglasses to protect your respiratory system and your eyes.
